prosecutor in Phoenix's Serial Shooter case said in closing arguments Tuesday that the main suspect carried out the shootings for fame and kept news clippings of the crimes as “trophies.”

Prosecutor Laura Reckart told jurors that Dale Hausner had an elaborate plan to “kill, maim, destroy and terrify.”

The 36-year-old is on trial on charges of killing eight people and attacking 20 others in a series of random nighttime shootings in 2005 and 2006.

Reckart said everything about Hausner points to his desire for notoriety — a job in boxing photography, a hosting gig for a cable TV show, and a role in a local commercial for a law group. She said articles of the shootings and a videotape of America's Most Wanted about the killings found in Hausner's apartment were trophies, “his celebrity-status symbols.”

More Ariz. state parks eyed for closure; board to meet in Peoria

Three more state parks are being considered for closure because of state budget cuts, bringing to 11 the number that could be shuttered in coming weeks.

Parks Director Ken Travous told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he is adding the three additional parks to a list of eight others previously identified as being considered for closure.

Travous identified the three as Red Rock State Park in Sedona, Jerome State Historic Park in Jerome and Tonto National Bridge State Park near Payson

Four Democratic U.S. House members are calling for the new attorney general and Homeland Security secretary to investigate allegations of racial profiling against Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

“Sheriff Arpaio has repeatedly demonstrated disregard for the rights of Hispanics in the Phoenix metropolitan area,” said a press release issued by U.S. Rep. John Conyers Jr., chairman of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee, and three other lawmakers. “Under the guise of immigration enforcement, his staff has conducted raids in residential neighborhoods in a manner condemned by the community as racial profiling.

“Racial profiling and segregation are simply not acceptable,” Conyers, from Michigan, is quoted as saying in the release. “Media stunts and braggadocio are no substitute for fair and effective law enforcement"

Development restrictions near Luke Air Force Base upheld

Superior Court judge has ruled in the state's favor and against Maricopa County in a case that stemmed from residential encroachment on Luke Air Force Base and its Auxiliary Field 1.

Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard had argued that the future of Luke, located in Glendale, was at stake, as well as the $2.2 billion a year in economic activity the base generates.

Goddard and other base advocates feared that overturning the law and permitting residential development near Luke and "Aux 1" could imperil Arizona's other military installations, which, combined with Luke, annually pump $9 billion into the economy.

Arpaio demands all emails, phone logs from 36 county officials

Just when we thought the civil war between the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors and Sheriff Joe Arapio couldn’t get nastier, it did.

The Insider learned that Arpaio filed a public records request asking for all sent and received emails, calendars, and copies of all office and cell phone logs for 36 county employees. The request does not include a time period, which means Arpaio’s going after anything and everything he can get his hands on.

It will come at a price to taxpayers: officials estimate it could cost $200 an hour for IT personnel to pore through the records, attorney time for redactions, plus up to $20,000 in new software to more easily pull the requested information.

Cameras catch 2 Gilbert officers speeding

A pair of Gilbert police officers could face discipline after a freeway speed camera photographed both speeding, according to internal affairs police documents released this week.

Officers Andy Bates and Michael Bukowski were returning from the Maricopa County 4th Avenue jail in Phoenix on Nov. 13 and were photographed driving 68 mph and 72 mph, respectively, in a 55 mph section of Interstate 17, police documents state.

"Both officers believed the speed limit was 65 mph," said Sgt. Mark Marino, a police spokesman. "Ultimately, the officers are responsible for their driving."

Gray wolf's shooting death investigated

PINETOP - Federal agents are investigating the suspicious death of an endangered Mexican gray wolf near Pinetop.

The female wolf was found on Jan. 19. It had died from a gunshot wound and was dumped along Highway 260.

The wolf was part of the Moonshine Pack in the Mexican Wolf Reintroduction
Project in Arizona and New Mexico.

"Every wolf we have helped put back on the landscape deserves a chance to survive in the wild," Benjamin Tuggle, regional director for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's Southwest region, said in a statement. "We feel confident that our investigations will identify the responsible parties and they will be brought to justice."

Peanut-butter recall grows as Arizonans get sick

The scope of a nationwide salmonella investigation mushroomed Tuesday as manufacturers recalled dozens of snack products popular with children and young adults.

More than 470 people in 43 states, including 10 here in Arizona, have fallen ill in recent months.

The Food and Drug Administration believes they all consumed peanut butter or peanut-based products that were made at a Georgia plant owned by Peanut Corp. of America.

Six of those who fell ill in Arizona were under the age of 20, the state Department of Health Services said.

More foreclosures predicted for 2009

This annual conference has become a must-attend event for people involved in Arizona real estate because of the expert speakers and their honest, even startling projections. Last year, there was stunned silence when analysts predicted home prices would fall 30 to 35 percent off their 2006 peak and any recovery was years away. So far home prices are more than 40 percent off the peak.

A man was arrested on Interstate 10 Thursday morning after a traffic stop revealed 3 pounds of methamphetamine allegedly hidden inside a fire extinguisher in his car.

A Department of Public Safety officer stopped a 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck on westbound Interstate 10, north of Tucson, around 10:10 a.m. Thursday. The driver's behavior led the officer to suspect criminal activity, and the officer received consent to search the truck, according to DPS.

DPS raises speed threshold for camera tickets

The magic number is now 11.

The Department of Public Safety announced Thursday that drivers can get an extra mile-per-hour of leeway before one of the many photo-enforcement cameras around the Valley snaps their picture, pushing the threshold from 10 mph over the posted speed limit to 11 mph.

The change in policy ultimately only affects those rare 55 mph zones on Valley freeways — such as I-17 and Arizona 51 — where the 10 mph threshold was previously in place.

The move comes one week after state officials increased the speed limit from 55 mph to 65 mph on the stretch of I-10 that runs through central Phoenix, giving drivers a more uniform approach to gauging their speed, DPS officials said.

Light rail's park-and-ride lots prove popular

The parties are over, the bands are long gone, but passengers were still flocking to the Valley's new Metro light rail Monday to catch a free ride.

The lone Mesa park-and-ride lot on Main Street between Dobson and Alma School roads was nearly full with about 700 cars at midday Monday.

A lot in Tempe at McClintock Road and Apache Boulevard was more than half full at noon, said Nikki Ripley, a city spokeswoman. Two other park-and-ride lots were nearly full or filling up.

But it was a mixed bag in Phoenix, which has four park-and-ride lots. Many of those lots were far from full early in the day, said Marie Chapple Camacho, a spokeswoman for the Phoenix Transit Department

Drivers with a blood-alcohol content level of 0.15 percent or higher are considered extreme-DUI offenders. 13,500 tickets issued by W. Valley speed cameras

More than 13,000 motorists driving in the West Valley have been sent speeding tickets since cameras on Loop 101 and I-10 were activated in October.

More than 40,000 tickets were issued statewide in the first two months of the Arizona Department of Public Safety's speed-enforcement camera program, which started in September. West Valley cameras were turned on at the end of October, and drivers received about 13,500 tickets in six weeks, according to the DPS.

The fastest speed clocked so far by a DPS camera was 130 mph on 1-10 in the West Valley and again on Arizona 51.

But Apache County Atty. Criss Candelaria wrote that he has "tendered a plea offer to the juvenile's attorneys that would resolve all the charges in the juvenile court contingent on the results of the mental health evaluations."

Candelaria was responding to a defense motion seeking to block him from dropping one of two first-degree murder charges the boy is facing for the shooting deaths of his father, Vincent Romero, 29, and Romero's roommate, Timothy Romans, 39, earlier this month.

Suspect in 9 bank robberies arrested

Store error helps uncover credit-card scam

An honest mistake by Wal-Mart employees over the sale of a computer laptop led to the uncovering of a Valleywide scam that involved stolen credit card information, Chandler police said.

The tip to authorities came about 4 p.m. Sunday when Wal-Mart workers got suspicious about three men who claimed they had purchased a laptop only to get an empty box, according to police spokesman Detective David Ramer.

When police officers arrived at the store on Arizona Avenue near the SanTan Freeway to investigate the suspected fraud, the three men ran and threw a bunch of credit cards to the ground, Ramer said.

The group, Mexicans and Americans Thinking Together, is going to spend "several hundred thousand dollars" on TV advertising in four states.
